Dorothea Dix was a teacher before she started working in the insane asylums. She became a teacher at the age fifteen and taught girls from ages six to eight for three years. She later closed down her school and returned to Dix mansion were she lived with her grandmother, Madame Dix, and started a new school for girls. This time having two separate classes one for the poor and another for the wealthy girls. After years of teaching she shut down her school and worked at East Cambridge Jail in 1841. Here is were she saw the horrible conditions that the , drunks, criminals, and the mentally ill people were subjected to. Later in 1844, Dix started working in the insane asylum.
Dr. John Minson Galt earned his Bachelor's of Art (A.B.) degree at William and Mary College in 1838. He also got his Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree at the university of Pennsylvania in medical department in 1841. In that same year he started working at the Eastern State Hospital as a superintendent at the age of 22.
